Question 1What does tenting of the near wall tell you?

Show answer

Answer d. The wall bends under the tip as it presses on it. Advance a little more to enter, then stop.

Question 2Why is flashback unreliable for confirming the needle is in the lumen?

Show answer

Answer c. A needle through both walls can still return blood if part of the bevel lies in the lumen. Rely on the image of the tip.

Question 3You have gone through the back wall. What do you do?

Show answer

Answer c. Retrace the path under vision. Re-enter at a lower angle, and check the tip is inside the lumen before you advance the catheter.

Question 4Why is extra care needed over the vein in the antecubital fossa?

Show answer

Answer b. A needle that transfixes the vein can reach structures beneath it. Keep the tip in view and stop once it is in the lumen.
