Question 1Where does the femoral nerve lie in relation to the femoral artery at the inguinal crease?

Show answer

Answer b. From lateral to medial, the order is nerve, artery, vein. The nerve lies under fascia iliaca, outside the femoral sheath which holds the artery and vein.

Question 2Why do you insert the needle from the lateral side?

Show answer

Answer c. With a lateral to medial path, the needle meets the nerve first and keeps away from the femoral artery and vein.

Question 3Which area does a femoral nerve block not cover reliably?

Show answer

Answer d. The outer thigh belongs to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. A fascia iliaca block reaches it more reliably.

Question 4What does correct spread look like?

Show answer

Answer b. Fluid deep to fascia iliaca surrounds the nerve. Fluid above the fascia stays away from it, and swelling inside the nerve means the tip is in the nerve.

Question 5What do you tell the patient and ward team after the block?

Show answer

Answer d. The femoral nerve supplies the quadriceps. Weakness can cause a fall until the block wears off.
