Question 1What is the first step when the veins look small and flat?

Show answer

Answer c. Simple measures fill the veins. Scan again after they have taken effect, because a vein that looked unusable is often a good target.

Question 2Why lower the arm below heart level?

Show answer

Answer b. A dependent limb increases venous filling. Patient comfort and safety decide how far you go.

Question 3What should you do with the tourniquet once the cannula is in?

Show answer

Answer c. A tourniquet left on for longer than needed is uncomfortable and raises the risk of tissue damage. Release it as soon as the cannula is in, or earlier if the patient has pain.

Question 4You will use the same cannula for a potassium sample. What do you advise about the hand?

Show answer

Answer c. Prolonged muscular activity can falsely raise the potassium result. A few squeezes help the vein fill without distorting the sample.
